Joy Allcock
Joy is an author, publisher and literacy consultant. She originally trained and worked as an Occupational Therapist, then in 2000 she completed a Master of Education degree with first class honours at Massey University. She has been working in the literacy field since 1995 and has coordinated a number of literacy projects in both primary and secondary schools. She has also run professional development workshops for teachers across New Zealand and internationally.
Joy has written and published a range literacy resources which have been used across New Zealand and beyond for more than twenty years. In 2016 she began working with Jill Eggleton and Tracy Strudley of Global Education Systems, to redesign and republish her resources. Joy, Jill and Tracy formed Code Education Ltd and these new resources are published under the Code-Ed brand. www.code-ed.co.nz
As well as working on her own resources, Joy has collaborated with other educational publishers to produce a range of literacy resources. She was also a contributing author to the Ministry of Education publications Effective Literacy Practice Years 1 to 4 and Effective Literacy Practice Years 5 to 8 (Learning Media), and to work on the final stages of development of the Literacy learning Progressions.
Between 2014 and 2016 Joy led the Shine Literacy Research Project which showed it is possible to accelerate early literacy achievement for all students in any school through a small but significant change in approach to early literacy instruction. Joy presented this research at the World Literacy Online Summit in 2020.
